A favorite time of the day for many is having a cup of coffee with breakfast in the morning. Breakfast rooms are wonderful in a home. Typically open concept and adjacent to the kitchen they area place where families eat, get homework done or sit down to chat. They can be tucked away in nooks with banquette seating and added in the most creative ways. In more formal homes over the centuries there were separate spaces dedicated to breakfast rooms often featuring lattice wall coverings or wall paper with birds and climbing flowers. This gave the appearance of bringing the outdoors in. Surrounded by windows these rooms were designed to bring in light and nature. Typically adorned with fresh flowers and even fountains, these areas of the home have been a favorite through the ages.

My favorite breakfast room of all time is at Hill Wood Museum which is the former home of Marjorie Merriweather Post in Washington D.C. Your heart skips a beat upon entry to this fabulous space! Ms. Marjorie entertained guest both family and famous in this incredible space.. The balloon shades are to doe for, and the chandelier once hung in the palace of Catherine The Great at Tsarskoe Selo. If you have not been to Hillwood I highly recommend visiting upon your next trip to DC. The Russian collection of accessories, art, furniture and decor acquired by Ms. Post is truly an incredible tale and one of the most detailed and intricate pieces you will ever see worldwide! I am very much looking forward to returning to the D.C. Metro area and will surely be spending time at Hillwood.

I have linked the decor and products in my breakfast room image above for you to browse through. Remember when designing one of these special spaces it is always a great idea to close light and airy drapery treatments, add favorite accessories and personal lamps to your room. Adding fresh or faux flowers is always an added bonus to greet the day and take in a cup of coffee with! Enjoy your week!
